Hydroxy methionine manganese is the manganese salt of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio) butanoic acid. In 2010, Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council approved hydroxy methionine and its manganese salt as feed additives. Mn-MHA not only provides the essential trace element manganese but also serves as a nutritional analogue of methionine. Its main benefits include promoting bone and cartilage development, enhancing antioxidant defenses, improving reproductive performance, and strengthening immunity. With high stability and bioavailability, Mn-MHA has become a cost-effective alternative to inorganic manganese salts in compound feeds, concentrates, and premixes.

1) Layers
In layer diets, replacing inorganic manganese and zinc with hydroxy methionine chelated manganese and zinc maintained production performance and egg quality while reducing trace mineral excretion, demonstrating efficient and eco-friendly characteristics. During the late laying period, it also tended to improve laying rate, daily egg output, and feed-to-egg ratio.

2) Growing–finishing pigs
In growing–finishing pigs, partial replacement (1/5–2/5) of inorganic trace minerals with MHA-M not only improved average daily gain and enhanced immune and antioxidant functions but also significantly reduced fecal excretion of Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn.

3) Aquatic animals
Supplementing 30.69–45.09 mg/kg hydroxy methionine chelated manganese in the diet of Litopenaeus vannamei (Pacific white shrimp) significantly improved growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and immune function, and enhanced manganese deposition in tissues. The optimal level was 30.69 mg/kg, which increased antioxidant enzyme activity, improved lipid metabolism, and downregulated genes related to endoplasmic reticulum stress and apoptosis.
