Common Micronutrient Deficiencies in Fattening Pigs Farming and Suggestions for Supplementation
1. Iron
Iron deficiency can cause nutritional anemia in pigs, pale skin and mucous membranes (visible mucous membranes such as conjunctiva and oral mucosa are white), listlessness, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, and growth arrest. Although fenced pigs are not as hypersensitive to iron as piglets, they still occur under certain circumstances (e.g., chronic intestinal bleeding, parasitic infection).
At the same time, iron deficiency can lead to poor disease resistance of pigs and easy to develop other diseases.

2.Zinc
Zinc deficiency causes parakeratosis of the pig's skin (paraditis), which begins as small red spots, followed by well-defined red patches on the abdomen, inner thighs, and neck, and eventually develops into thick, dry, cracked crusts with a "paving stone" appearance. Severe cases can affect food intake and weight gain.
Zinc deficiency can lead to decreased immunity, slow wound healing, and poor testicular development (affecting breeding value).

3. Selenium and VE(both synergistic effects, often considered together)
Selenium deficiency and VE cause nutritional hepatic necrosis (hepatic dystrophy), white myopathy, and morular heart disease in pigs.
White myopathy is characterized by degeneration, weakness, lameness and even paralysis of skeletal muscles, especially in the hind limbs.
The appearance of hepatic necrosis was acute death, and necropsy showed liver enlargement, friable texture, and black and white markings on the surface.
The manifestation of morular heart disease is myocardial hemorrhage and necrosis, leading to death from acute heart failure.

4.Copper
Copper deficiency can lead to anemia and abnormal bone development in pigs
The symptoms are similar to those of iron-deficiency anemia, with pallor and growth retardation. It also causes decreased bone strength, swollen joints, and limp. Copper is also involved in coat coloration; lack of it can lead to rough, fading (fading) coat.
Cu at high doses (125 to 250mg/kg) was used as a growth promoter, which significantly improved feed utilization rate and daily gain.

5.Iodine
Iodine deficiency causes goiter (large neck disease) in pigs, which mainly affects the synthesis of thyroid hormones and consequently the basal metabolic rate.
The symptoms were thickened neck and thyroid hyperplasia. Fattening pigs exhibit growth retardation, lethargy, and increased fat deposition (fat thickness).
Cu at high doses (125 to 250mg/kg) was used as a growth promoter, which significantly improved feed utilization rate and daily gain.

6.Manganese
Mn deficiency causes abnormal bone development and reproductive disorders in pigs
The main symptoms in fattening pigs were short bones, enlarged joints and lameness. Although primarily affecting breeding sows, fencers can also affect growth plate and cartilage development when deficient, resulting in leg disease.
