How Useful L-selenomethionine in Animal Nutrition

The effect of selenium
For livestock and poultry breeding
1. Improve production performance and feed conversion rate;
2. Improve reproduction performance;
3. Improve the quality of meat, eggs and milk, and improve the selenium content of products;
4. Improve animal protein synthesis;
5. Improve the anti-stress ability of animals;
6. Adjust intestinal microorganisms to maintain intestinal health;
7. Improve animal immunity…
Why is organic selenium superior to inorganic selenium?
1. As an external additive, the bioavailability of selenium cysteine (SeCys) was not higher than that of sodium selenite.(Deagen et al., 1987, JNut.)
2. Animals cannot synthesize selenoproteins directly from exogenous SeCys.
3. The effective use of SeCys in animals is completely obtained through the re-transformation and synthesis of selenium in the metabolic pathway and in the cells.
4. The selenium pool used for stable storage of selenium in animals can only be obtained by inserting the synthesis sequence of selenium-containing proteins in the form of SeMet instead of methionine molecules, but SeCys cannot use this synthesis pathway.
Absorption way of selenomethionine
It is absorbed in the same way as methionine, which enters the blood system through the sodium pumping system in the duodenum. The concentration donesn’t impact the absorbtion. Because methionine is an essential amino acid, it is usually highly absorbed.
Biological functions of selenomethionine
1. Antioxidant function: Selenium is the active center of GPx, and its antioxidant function is realized through GPx and thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). Antioxidant function is the main function of selenium, and other biological functions are mostly based on this.
2. Growth promotion: A large number of studies have proved that adding organic selenium or inorganic selenium to the diet can improve the growth performance of poultry, pigs, ruminants or fish, such as reducing the ratio of feed to meat and increasing the daily weight gain.
3. Improved reproductive performance: Studies have shown that selenium can improve sperm motility and sperm count in semen, while selenium deficiency can increase sperm malformation rate;Adding selenium in the diet can increase the fertilizing rate of sows, increase the number of litter , increase the rate of egg production, improve eggshell quality and increase the egg weight.
4. Improve meat quality: Lipid oxidation is the main factor of meat quality deterioration, selenium antioxidant function is the main factor to improve meat quality.
5. Detoxification: Studies have shown that selenium can antagonize and alleviate the toxic effects of lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury and other harmful elements, fluoride and aflatoxin.
6. Other functions: In addition, selenium plays an important role in immunity, selenium deposition, hormone secretion, digestive enzyme activity, etc.
