Common Micronutrient Deficiencies in Piglet Farming and Suggestions for Supplementation
1. Iron
Iron deficiency causes nutritional anemia, which is the most common problem in Suckling piglets. It presented with pale skin and mucous membrane, coarse coat, dyspnea, listlessness, and growth arrest. The iron content of breast milk is very low, and the piglet's own reserves are only sufficient for 3-5 days, and severe anemia usually develops by 2-3 weeks of age if it is not replenished in time.
Iron deficiency can also lead to decreased resistance to diseases such as diarrhea and pneumonia.

2.Zinc
Zinc deficiency causes parakeratosis, the most typical symptom. The clinical manifestations were erythema, crusting and tears on the skin, especially in the eyes, mouth, scrotum and limbs. The skin is rough and resembles scabies, but anthelmintic agents are ineffective.

Deficiency of selenium and VE results in white myopathy, a degeneration of skeletal muscle and heart muscle characterized by sudden death, claudication, stiff gait, and heart failure.
Deficiency of selenium and VE can lead to hepatic dystrophies, liver necrosis, and sudden death.
Deficiency of selenium and VE causes the morula heart, bleeding of the myocardium with a morula like appearance, leading to acute death.

4.Copper
Copper deficiency causes anemia that is similar to iron-deficiency anemia because copper is involved in iron metabolism.
Copper deficiency leads to abnormal bone development, enlarged joints, fragile bones, and vulnerability to fractures.
Copper deficiency results in decreased growth performance, and even if it does not exhibit severe deficiency, low doses of copper, especially copper sulfate, as a growth promoter can significantly improve feed utilization and promote growth. Lack of it is less effective.
