A: The small peptide transporter 1 (PepT1) utilizes the proton gradient from the intestinal lumen to the enterocytes to transport dipeptides and tripeptides.

In terms of absorption pathways, small peptide chelates utilize the highly efficient di‑ and tripeptide transport system (PepT1) in animals, which features rapid transport, low energy consumption, and a high capacity that is not easily saturated.

In contrast, amino acid chelates – because both the terminal amino and carboxyl groups are involved in chelation, leaving no free carboxyl group – can only be taken up via the less efficient oligopeptide transport system.

Consequently, small peptide chelates are absorbed faster and with greater bioavailability than amino acid chelates.
